Kabbalat Torah, Accepting Torah
On Mount Sinai, on the sixth of Sivan, in the year 2448, on the third day of the week, Hashem gave the Torah to the Israelites.
This was a one time event, unique in the history of the world.
Judaism is based on Torah. Kabbalat Torah means acceptance of Torah, or receiving Torah. Receiving the Torah differs from the giving of the Torah. The giving of the Torah was a one time event. Receiving the Torah requires our continuous effort to understand and apply Torah to the particular situations and challenges in our lives. Thus, receiving the Torah is a repetitive individual living and dynamic event occurring each moment when we think, speak, and act in a way that is in accordance with Torah.
